Smart
Business Planning Using Lessons Learned

As we enter 2004, it seems that the rebounding economy is
finally here and many business have been hanging on waiting for
the economy to recover. Are things guaranteed to get better this
year? The experts believe that even though the economy is
improving, to be successful business will have to continue to
operate competitively and with thinner margins than ever before.
The secret to success in the next few years will be to
incorporate lessons learned during the lean times even when
business is booming and customers are knocking on your door.
The silver lining in the past couple of years is now coming
to light. We've learned to do more with less. Look around,
you'll notice many companies operating with smaller staff than a
few years ago, but still conducting business just like in boom
times. Following is a collective list of tips from knowledge
gained by our clients and colleagues that can help you in the
future.
Lessons learned that will pay off during economic recovery:
(1) maximize personnel productivity - filling empty desks may
not drive revenue or improve customer satisfaction, (2) save
money - outsource non-customer facing functions, (3) positive
cash flow is vital - pay close attention to past due invoices
& collections, (4) review costs and terms - renegotiate for
discounts or longer terms, (5) seek out strategic alliances -
you can help friends and they can help you, (6) trim
unproductive sales personnel - reward your best producers, (7)
evaluate and justify every expense - don't spend money where you
don't have to, and (8) raises relate to increase in
productivity, profitability or outstanding efforts - clearly
communicate this understanding to your personnel. Let us know if
you have any valuable lessons to share. We're always looking to
learn something new.

Get the Best Results From "Send to a
Friend"
At the bottom of each newsletter we give you a
"Send to a Friend" option. This is the best
way to forward this newsletter to a friend or colleague
who might be interested. I know it's easy to just
forward your email but unfortunately, if you just do
this the links won't work for your friend.
The "Send to a Friend" option not only
sends this newsletter with all links operational, it
also allows you to add a personal message for the
recipient. Don't worry about adding your friend to an
unwanted mailing list. The recipient will only be added
if they choose to subscribe. Thank you for helping
distribute timely and useful articles to your
colleagues.
